Hello,
For those of you that have known me for awhile, you know how excited I am to be transitioning into life as a full time trial consultant with Courtroom Intelligence. For those of you that I’ve yet to meet.
I grew up in Texas and spent the last 20 years on the East Coast. For 18 years, I was a public defender in Brooklyn, New York. I started conducting jury simulations with my father, Courtroom co–founder Jon Smith, when I was in high school. When I haven’t been on trial myself, I’ve been conducting jury simulation research for clients engaged in all sorts of litigation all over the country.
It’s fair to say that the cases I’ve worked on, like the clients I’ve represented, have come from wildly different parts of the spectrum. But some things are “constant”. Like jury trials. My entire career I have either been on trial, preparing for trial, or helping other people get to, and through, jury trials.
A central part of my practice in Brooklyn was training, supporting and closely collaborating with attorneys of all experience levels as we built and tried cases. My years as a Public Defender taught me the mechanics and rhythm of jury trials, the undeniable power of a strong team, and how to fight for a client with everything I have in front of a jury.
My work with Courtroom Intelligence continues to show me what can happen when clients are able and willing to invest in their case early, and objectively test it. As I move into this new chapter, I am excited to offer our clients an
The major change that I’m bringing to Courtroom is the infusion of experienced trial attorneys like me to facilitate our studies and support our clients as we take what we learn in the simulation research and use it to build cases. Whether it’s refining themes, readying witnesses, and communicate their story to the jury in a way that they otherwise couldn’t.
What comes after that depends on the particular client situation, but he has never encountered a situation
These parallel experiences have afforded me a chance to observe a few “constants” that inform my philosophy now.
Our guiding principle is that our clients deserve every benefit that we can give them. In order to do that we stick with what works, and we either stop or fix what doesn’t, with a humble eye for growth.
Sometimes then our work is done. Maybe not.
be able putting all of my time and effort into Courtroom Intelligence and our clients.
